Wie es sich anfühlt, zehntausend Kilometer von der Heimat verschleppt und zu Zwangsarbeit in Sibirien verurteilt zu sein, ohne zu wissen, ob und wie man den nächsten Tag überlebt, das erzählt Eduard Stempfer in seinem erschütternden Tatsachenbericht:

„Ich bleibe bei meinem Bericht absichtlich mehr auf der gemütlichen Seite… Man trieb uns endlich mit den blanken Säbeln und der berühmten Russenknute oder Kosakenpeitsche zum Schacht, zwang ein paar in den Fahrstuhl hinein, und los ging’s, etwa sechshundert Meter senkrecht in die Tiefe, jeder versehen mit einer kleinen Bergmannslampe… Selbstverständlich wurden wir in keiner Weise entlohnt. Dafür gab es immer eine große Auseinandersetzung, wenn unsere Finken abgelaufen waren. Und ganze wollten wir haben, denn auf der Kohle herumlaufen, mit einem Sack um die Füße, war nicht gerade angenehm.“

Eduard Stempfer verbrachte fast den gesamten Ersten Weltkrieg in russischer Kriegsgefangenschaft. Er verfasste diesen Bericht im Jahre 1938, in der Vorahnung dessen, was sich erneut über Europa zusammenbraute. Zum 100. Jahrestag des Versailler Vertrages liegen nun seine handschriftlichen Aufzeichnungen in gedruckter Form vor. Das ist ein Glücksfall – und eine Warnung an uns, die wir im Frieden aufgewachsen sind und diesen als Selbstverständlichkeit empfinden. Denn die Geschichte kann sich wiederholen.
